BHX plane spotting photography guide
Plan a better Birmingham Airport photography session by choosing a legitimate viewing location, checking the light and weather, and keeping airport security and other visitors in mind.
Start with location, not equipment
The official Car Park 5 area and Sheldon Country Park offer very different angles. Decide where you are going before choosing lenses or planning shots. A moderate-to-long telephoto is useful at many airport viewpoints, but the ideal focal length depends on aircraft size and your exact position.
Light and weather
Cloud, rain and wind can change quickly around the airport. Check our BHX weather page before leaving, and remember that a forecast does not guarantee a particular runway direction.
Security and etiquette
Never climb airport fences or structures, obstruct gates, block roads or trespass for a photograph. Keep tripods and bags clear of paths, respect families and other enthusiasts, and follow any instructions from airport staff or police.
